Boy and girl on Spanish beach

Getting There

Valencia Airport
Alicante Airport

This newly discovered area of Spain is named after the orange blossom that is a hallmark of the countryside, with whole districts perfumed by its sweet aroma. But orange groves, the traditional backbone of the economy, are being overtaken by residential tourism along miles of golden Blue Flag beaches while the historic interior with its traditions, folklore and cuisine remains an important backdrop.

With good motorway links to airports at Valencia, Barcelona, Reus and Girona, this Costa is poised for take-off with an increasing number of tourism initiatives to attract more residential and traditional tourism. There are new marinas and facilities around the area’s 22 Blue Flag beaches, record numbers of cruise ships calling into the port-resort of Castellon with its “royal” yacht club and Americas Cup connections.

Spurred on by the prospect of a new international airport which is already underway, residential developers are building new resorts and condominiums in prime locations on beaches and golf courses and also looking inland to take advantage of the spectacular mountain scenery. Property in this part of Spain is likely to prove a good investment.

Historic towns like Peniscola, built on an enormous rock surrounded by the sea and linked to the mainland by a sandbar, and next door neighbour Benicarlo, have turned themselves into modern, all year round beach resorts. Small towns like Oropesa del Mar, with a new marina and Torreblanca, next door to a large nature park, are enhancing their natural attractions like Blue Flag beaches with new residential developments, designed to sit comfortably into the greenery and scenery.

It is rugged inland, with history-filled walled towns, pine forests and cascading mineral water streams and rivers. Morella, a hilltop town of narrow streets founded by the Moors, has arts and crafts as an additional tourist attraction while Vilafames stands on a hill surrounded by ancient olive trees and fruit orchards. It too is topped by a Moorish castle.

Montanejos, in the Alto Mijares district, is a popular summer holiday spot due to its mineral water and spa and the Alto Palancia mountain playground is ideal for walking and mountain biking beneath blue skies and towering peaks.

Back along the coastal strip new residential developments include quality-built apartments, penthouses and villas with Torreblanca beachside prices starting at EUR 150,000 for 2-bed, 2-bath apartments and EUR 177,300 for 3-bed, 2-bath penthouses.
