The British property pound, coupled with EU grants, has transformed this sleepy salt ‘n fishing town into a teeming metropolis that’s a home from home for Brits, Irish, Germans and, latterly, Russians - while the locals have got richer and moved out to the hills of La Marina, having sold the family plot in town.

People watching along the broad sweeping promenade with public and café seating, every kind of indoor and outdoor sports played in splendid new facilities, sailing from a large-scale marina, golf in the growing number of courses within 15 minutes of the town.

The developers have just about filled every gap in the promenade and for several blocks behind it, leaving a wide choice of sea-view and urban apartments. The hills have fewer cranes nowadays, but there are conserved green areas and mega shopping opportunities.
